Charles Ray Nellis' Obituary
MAYVILLE- Charles Ray Nellis, 93 of East Aurora, and formerly of Honeysette Rd, Mayville, NY, died Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Absolut Care of Aurora Park in East Aurora, NY.
He was born March 22, 1924, in Pleasantville, NY, the son of th late Wayne Nellis and Doris Nellis Zenns.
He attended Pleasantville Country School and Mayville Central School. He worked as a logger most of his life. Ray worked for Delmar Fredrickson for 12 years. Also, he worked as maintenance personnel at the Chautauqua Home in Dunkirk, NY for 26 years.
Ray was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mayville, NY. He was a deacon, trustee, and usher. He was also a member of Elma First Baptist Church in Elma, NY, a member of the New York State Retired Employees Association, and a member of the Mayville VFW Post 8647.
Ray served in WWII, January 19, 1943 to October 10, 1945, the European Theater. He was under the command of General Patton.
He loved his horses and loved to put them in parades with his wagons.
Ray was the beloved husband of Eva Cross Nellis, whom he married August 24, 1946 in Pleasantville Church in Pleasantville, NY.
He is the cherished father of Carol (James) Tuck of East Aurora, NY, and grandfather of Deborah (Lee) Kupczyk and great-grandfather of Kyle Kupczyk of East Aurora, NY. Also, the grandfather of three step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. Also survived by a brother in-law, Allen Smith and a sister, Lois Edwards, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eva Cross Nellis, a brother, Alfed Nellis, and a sister, Eleanor Smith.
The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Mayville on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 11AM. The Rev. Wally Ostrander will officiate. Burial will be in Mayville Cemetery. Military Honors will be given by the Mayville VFW Post 8647.
Friends will be received for calling hours from 4-8PM on Friday, September 29 at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville, 139 S. Erie St., Mayville, NY 14757.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Mayville, or to the Elma First Baptist Church in Elma, NY.
