MAYVILLE- Charles "Charlie" Randall Smith, 75, of Mayville, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born November 30, 1946, in Westfield, NY the son of the late Clayton and Florence Brushaber Smith.

Charlie had attended Chautauqua and Panama Central Schools. After high school Charlie worked for the Chautauqua Institution's Buildings and Grounds as a maintenance worker, Vacation Properties as a construction worker and then for Andriaccio's restaurant.

He was a fifty-five-year member of and former Chief of the Chautauqua Fire Department and Fire Police, a member of Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church, and was a part of the Sea Lion Crew.

Charlie enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially duck hunting and ice fishing as well as watching the weather and letting every family member know of when extreme weather was in the forecast. He was a handy man and was always fixing things and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty eight years; Diane Chapman Smith, whom he married April 21, 1973 in Chautauqua, NY, three daughters; Rhonda (James) Kester, Betsy Smith, and Jennifer Smith, all of Mayville, three grandchildren; Alyssa (Nick) Ondreako of Westfield, Samantha (Josh) Green of Mayville, and Dexter DeGolier IV of Mayville, three great grandchildren; Madison Ralph, Carter Ondreako, and Keira Goodwill, one sister; Elaine (Clarence) Rarey of Warren, PA, a step brother; David (Vanessa) Tracy of Ashville, NY, his mother in law; Betty Chapman of Mayville, a brother in law; David (Nora) Chapman of Arizona, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; Linda Smith, a father-in-law; Robert Chapman, and a half-brother; Larry McEwen.

The funeral will be held at 1PM on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 South Erie St). The Rev. Paul Womack will officiate. Burial will be in the Chautauqua Cemetery. Friends will be received for visitation from 4-7PM on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held in the spring and will be announced.
