MAYVILLE- Donald John Anderson, 71, of Mayville, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center in Gerry, NY, surrounded by his siblings, following a lengthy battle with dementia.

He was born March 15, 1952, in Dunkirk, NY the son of the late Richard A. Anderson Sr. and Jean B. van der Meulen Anderson.

Don was a 1970 graduate of Mayville Central School. He then worked as a self-employed carpenter until he retired. He was known for his detailed finish work and did many projects for his family.

He enjoyed basketball, biking, woodworking, bible studies, natural foods and health remedies, collecting baseball cards, photography, and was an avid reader, especially of western novels. He also loved to be in nature, especially hiking in the Chautauqua Gorge and enjoying the Barcelona view of Lake Erie.

Don is survived by his five siblings: Richard (Cindy) Anderson Jr. of Mayville, NY, Robert (Donna) Anderson of Amherst, NY, Deborah (Elmer) Kaprolat Jr. of Radford, VA, Kathleen (Bruce) Sweeney of Ashville, NY, and Beth (Scot) Cummings of Mayville, NY, two stepsons: Eric Olson of Round Lake, TX and Brian Olson of Austin, TX, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Richard A. Anderson Sr. and Jean B. van der Meulen Anderson.

The family will receive friends from 11 AM until 1 PM on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St). A private funeral service will follow. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
