MAYVILLE – Donald H. Mawhir II, 65, of Washington Ave. Mayville, died of cancer Saturday (July 30, 2016) surrounded by loved ones in his home.
He was born June 21, 1951 in Westfield, the son of the late Donald H. and Marion Ammeter Mawhir.
Don was known for his incredible sense of humor, loyalty, perseverance, and occasional stubbornness. He had a lifelong love for the game of golf and spent as much time as possible on the course making memories (and 3 putts) with his family and friends. When he wasn't golfing, he could be found rooting for the Buffalo Bills, gardening, reading Louis L'Amour western books, watching John Wayne movies, or gathering with loved ones to grill out, tell stories, and enjoy a few Coors Lights.
He is survived by his sister Barbara McHugh and her husband Bernie of Surprise, AZ; his sister Judy Plante and her husband Terry of Whitman, MA; his brother Jim Mawhir and wife Linda of Mayville, NY; his six nieces and nephews, Trisha Maslakowski, Shannon Larson, Bill Plante, J.D. Mawhir, Michael Lines and wife Amanda, Jeff McHugh and wife Keri; five great nieces and nephews, Taylor Maslakowski, Sydney Maslakowski, Chase McHugh, Luke McHugh, and Jake McHugh.
He was preceded in death by both his parents and younger sister Diane Lines.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. Rev. Mark Parsons of the Mayville United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Wednesday in the funeral home.
