Gretchen Linder Jahrling, 96, passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2026. Her beautiful smile and warm heart will be missed by all who knew her, especially her extensive family.

Born fittingly on Valentine's Day 1930 in Erie, PA to Anton and Pauline Linder, Gretchen spent her teenage summers in Chautauqua, NY where she met the love of her life, Bob Jahrling, at the bathing beach where he was a lifeguard.

She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1952, majoring in Zoology. She made lifelong friends there and stayed an active alumna throughout her life. After Mount Holyoke, Gretchen earned her Masters degree in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

In 1953, Gretchen married Bob and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage in Charleston, SC, Ridgewood, NJ, Chautauqua, NY and Ridgefield, CT. Gretchen travelled the world, loved spending time in her garden and on the tennis court but above all else, she created loving homes and established lifelong traditions for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her loyalty, generosity and grace, especially in her later years, is an inspiration to all.

Gretchen is survived by her five children: Heidi, Bob, Gretchen, Tim and Jennifer and their spouses, as well as 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Gretchen will rest in peace by her beloved in Chautauqua, NY.
