SHERMAN-Herbert Harold Smith, 79, of Sherman, died Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Heritage Park Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in Jamestown, NY.

He was born in "The Old Square House" at Pleasantville, Stockton, NY on July 2, 1938, the son of the late Ernest R. and Helen Furlow Smith.

Herb was a graduate of Mayville Central School in 1956, and a 1960 graduate of Houghton College and received a Master's degree from Syracuse University. He taught school for short periods of time in numerous high schools and area colleges in central New York State.  He also worked in several chain bookstores but eventually opened a used bookstore in Syracuse and then moved to Westfield, NY and opened a store there. For a number of years he has helped his friend run her store in Sherman, NY.

He is survived by his close friend and companion, Reta Carden of Sherman, one son; Jamie (Diane) Smith of Fairbanks, AK, One daughter; Jocelyn Ann Willett of Amherst, NY, six grandchildren; Zachery, Jarrett, and Ryan Willett, of Amherst, NY, and Richard, Robert, and Charles Curtis of Seattle, WA, Four Sisters; Mary Smith of Westfield, Ruth Frudd of Westfield Susan Hindman of Dewittville, And Peggy Kelwaski of Sherman, four brothers; Allen Smith of Avon Park, FL, Charles Smith of Barcelona, NY, Pete Smith of Mayville, NY, and Larry Smith of Honeoye, NY, and one adopted brother; Chris Bemus, of Stockton, NY.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife Diane Schwanke, a daughter; Peninnah Curtis,

three sisters; Alice Francis, Kathleen Turpin, and Esther Lawson, one brother; David Smith.

Per Herbs wishes, his body was donated to the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program.

A memorial service is being planned for the end of May. The date, time and location will be announced at a later date.
