MAYVILLE- James Robert Kester, lovingly known as "Big Jim", 73, of Mayville, passed away at his home on Friday, June 30, 2023, with family at his side following a brief illness.

He was born July 1, 1949, in Buffalo, NY the son of the late John and Sara Miller Kester.

Jim graduated from West Seneca West high school and earned his mechanics certification from BOCES and at the Ford Technician Program. He was hired at NYS DOT in Mayville, NY as a mechanic and then promoted to supervisor where he retired after more than thirty years.

Jim was an exempt member of the Mayville Fire and Rescue Squads. He enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, drag racing, hunting, fishing, playing softball in his younger days, building things, tinkering with anything with parts and souping up vehicles, including a lawn mower or two.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family for sporting events, holidays, family karaoke, playing cards and swimming in the pool.

He is survived by his loving wife; Lynn Huber Kester, six children; Joy (Doug) Bartlett of Dunkirk, NY, Holly Quinn of West Seneca, NY, Kerry Sluce of Cheektowaga, NY, Robert (Tammy) Kester of Westfield, NY, James (Rhonda) Kester of Chautauqua, NY, and Kelly (Jimmie) Botto of Dewittville, NY, several grandchildren, one surviving brother; Christian Kester of West Seneca, NY, and five nephews and two nieces, including John Kester of Lancaster, who briefly lived with Jim and his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: John Kester.

At Jim's request, there will be no public services observed. A private celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family.
