WESTFIELD - John H. Brewer III, 70, of Spring Street, Westfield, died Thursday (July 30, 2015) in his home.
He was born July 2, 1945 in Brownfield, PA, the son of the late John H. and Dolores Patterson Brewer. John was a veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1965 to 1969, serving in Vietnam 1968 to 1969.
He was the owner and manager of the former Brewer Funeral Home in Westfield from 1980 to 1993.
He was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Mayville where he was on the church council and he was also the church organist. He loved his church family very much. John was a life member of Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post 8647 VFW in Mayville, life member and past president of Chautauqua County Funeral Directors Association, a member of Chautauqua County and National Chapter of American Guild of Organists, and a former trustee for the Village of Westfield, Rotarian, and past Kiwanis member.
John enjoyed listening to and playing the pipe organ. He has helped to tune and repair pipe organs in several churches in Chautauqua County, often working for Ron Bishop Pipe Organ Service. Among the organs that were rebuilt or tuned were: the Fredonia College King's Hall Organ. Hurlbut Methodist Church at the Chautauqua Institute, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mayville, and the pipe organ at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
John loved his family dearly and is survived by his wife, Edith Sanderson Brewer, whom he married December 18, 1965 in Westfield; two sons, Shawn M (Rachel) Brewer of Westfield, and Jon T. (Milagros) Brewer of Thomasville, NC; three grandchildren, Ivy Brewer, Iris Brewer, and Jovanni Brewer: one step grandchild, Cameron Mitchell: one brother, Neville (Irma Jean) Brewer of Brownfield, PA.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Brewer who died July 29, 1992; and a nephew, Mark Brewer.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Mayville. Rev. Ivy Gauvin will officiate. Burial will be in the Westfield Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted by Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Sunday in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. Memorial may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, 20 East Marvin St., Mayville, NY 14757
