ASHVILLE – Josephine Hadley Spas, 96, of Rt. 394, Ashville, died Friday (December 19, 2014) in Winston Salem, NC.
She was born April 22, 1918 in Conewango Valley, NY the only child of the late Newton and Mabel Mason Hadley.
Josephine graduated from the former Chautauqua Central School, Houghton College and did graduate studies at Syracuse University and NYU. She taught public school music and gave private piano lessons.
She was a member of the Ashville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member and officer of the official church board, she had also been the choir director for many years. She held offices in the United Methodist Women both in the local district and conference level. She belonged to the Stedman Grange, North Harmony and Mayville Senior Citizens, Magnolia Cemetery Auxiliary, Chautauqua School Alumni Association, and she was a charter member of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW Auxiliary in Mayville.
Josephine enjoyed music, reading, traveling, and making handcrafts.
She is survived by five children Susan (Dale) Metz of Greensboro, NC, James (Teresa) Spas of Sigurd, UT, Paul (Constance) Spas of Ashville, Stephen (Jennifer) Spas of Ashville, and Joseph Spas of Ashville; 13 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry V. Spas whom she married March 5, 1946 at Rome Air Base, NY and who died May 3, 1969.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday (Dec. 29, 2014) in the Ashville United Methodist Church. Rev. Nicholas Perry will officiate. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm Sunday (Dec. 28, 2014) in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville.
