MAYVILLE- Katharine "Katie" Barnes Cardwell, 101, of Mayville and Sarasota, FL, died peacefully Sunday, June 30, 2019 at the Pines of Sarasota Nursing Home in Sarasota, FL.

She was born July 7, 1917 in DuBois, PA, the daughter of the late Professor Lee Hess and Ruth Hayes Barnes.

Katie was a graduate of Titusville High School Class of 1934. Although she grew up in Western Pennsylvania, she summered at her grandparent's farm on the Hartfield-Centralia Road or at the music school operated by her father and the Prominent Baroness Katharine Evans VonKlenner at Point Chautauqua. She studied voice in New York City with the Baroness after high school for four years and sang at Carnegie Hall and numerous choirs in her lifetime. She was a decedent of Sarah and Philo Barnes, two of the early settlers of Chautauqua County in the Stockton, Centralia, and Sinclairville area.

It was at Point Chautauqua that she met her husband, Thomas Evans Cardwell from Rochester, NY. They were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mayville on August 26, 1939.

Tom and Katie returned to Chautauqua County in the 1970's where they owned and operated the Mayville Diner and the Coffee Shop.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Thomas E. and her son, Thomas Lee Cardwell.

Katie is survived by her loving daughters; Gail Hagenah of Sarasota, FL and Gretchen Canfield of Bergen, NY, her devoted son in law; Henry Hagenah and grandsons John Hagenah, Brockport, NY, Matthew Hagenah, Boise, ID, Brett and James Wilcox of Bergen, NY, granddaughters Heather Hancock of Jamestown, Elizabeth Cardwell of Fredonia and Danelle Roane of Virginia. Katie will be remembered and loved for her pleasant smile, her kind spirit and her caring soul.

Katie was interred in the Stockton Greenwood Cemetery on July 5, 2019 with immediate family present. A memorial service will be held at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
