Lewis H. Johnson's Obituary
CHAUTAUQUA – Lewis H. Johnson, 92, of Chautauqua, NY and Englewood, Florida passed away Thursday (March 5, 2015) at Tanglewood Manor in Jamestown, NY.
He was born and raised in the Town of Chautauqua, the son of the late Henry and Grace (Card) Johnson. A 1940 graduate of Chautauqua High School, he was a Tool & Die maker for 32 years at the former MRC-TRW bearing plant in Jamestown. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lois Stark Johnson, with whom he operated Johnson's Cottages on Lake Chautauqua. Retiring in 1982, he took residency in Englewood to escape the cold winters, but enjoyed his summer cottage on Lake Chautauqua and the Chautauqua Summer Programs.
A Methodist, he was a member of the Methodist Men's Club of Englewood, often working at the pancake breakfasts. He was also a member of Peacock Lodge 696 F&AM in Mayville and the American Legion 493 of Mayville, he was a 65 year volunteer with the Chautauqua Fire Department where he was instrumental in getting back the 1929 Peter Pirsch Fire Engine and refurbishing it. He was a former member of the American Society of Tool Engineers.
Lewis was a very caring person toward everyone, and was willing to always help someone or to give them a tour of Chautauqua.
He is survived by two sons, Dennis and spouse Rosemarie of North Charleston, SC, Brian (Barbara Page) of Ferndale, CA, and a daughter, Luanne Elder and spouse Don of Westfield, NY. Three grandsons, Ralph Johnson and spouse Kay in China, Erik Johnson and spouse Nicola of North Charleston, SC and Jeremy Elder of Westfield, NY. One great grandson, Connor Johnson of North Charleston, SC. One sister, Pauline Bouckhuyt of Lakewood, NY and a cousin, Julia Cadogan of St Petersburg, FL.
No visitation will be observed. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (May 2, 2015) at the Chautauqua Fire Department.
Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua Fire Department Peter Pirsch Fund, PO Box F, Chautauqua, NY 14722 or the Hurlbut Memorial Church, PO Box 33, Chautauqua, NY 14722, or to Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 West Fairmount Ave., Lakewood, NY 14750.
