Dr. Mark Robert Hagen entered the arms of his Savior on November 5, 2021 after a 15-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Phyllis, adoring children Danielle (Andrew) Stoughton, Elissa (James) Young, Joshua (Steffannie) Hagen, Noelle (Jared) Brown, and Acacia Hagen, as well as his mother Hazel and brother Steven, nine grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. If his life could be measured by how many people knew more of God's love through him, how many babies delivered and nurtured, how many countries visited, and how many friends he made laugh to the point of tears or urination, then Mark's numbers were off the charts.

Born on August 14, 1953 in Batavia, NY to Hazel and the late Richard Hagen, Mark began riding his bike to church at a young age and found his life mission in serving Christ as his Savior. He went on to study Biology at Cornell University, attended medical school at the University of Buffalo, completed residency at C. S. Wilson Memorial Hospital, and joined Westfield Family Physicians in 1983, where he served the communities of Westfield and Sherman until PSP forced him into early retirement in 2010.  During this time, he earned many accolades for his numerous accomplishments in his chosen field.  Mark felt called to the mission field early on in his career and served in many countries throughout the years, even beyond his retirement from full-time practice.

Mark was known by many for his early morning runs in tiny shorts, his quirky sense of humor and gentle bedside manner, his eye for finding a great suit or tie at a thrift store, and his expertise in making the perfect foil dinner over a fire. He loved camping and fishing, winemaking and consuming, running and biking, playing guitar and singing along to his favorite Hymns or Beatles songs, and traveling the world.

Mark had a rare energy and zest for life, and though his disease took many things from him, he never lost his joyful spirit, and remarkably, he never complained. Fueled by the hope of the Resurrection, Mark walked a hard road with dignity and grace, and his family is at peace knowing he is finally free from his earthly body.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November, 14 at 4:00pm at Westfield Academy and Central School, 203 East Main St, Westfield, with a reception to follow.  There will be no calling hours, as it was Mark's desire that his body be donated to PSP research.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Hungerford Project at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, 20 Washington St, Westfield, NY, a project that Mark was an active participant of.  Condolences can be sent through Freay Funeral Home ( freayfuneralhome.com ).
