MAYVILLE- Newton "Newt" F. Wright, 79, of Mayville, died Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Westfield Memorial Hospital with family by his side.

He was born August 2, 1939 in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late Martin and Mary Murray Wright.

Newt had graduated from Mayville Central School in 1958 and immediately joined the United States Navy serving his country proudly for five years. From 1960 to 1963 he served on the USS ALCOR AK259. He was at sea at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After his service in the Navy he became a lineman for C & E Telephone Company for several years. From 1969 to 1999 he was a Union Electrician working for IBEW Local 106 in Jamestown.

Newt was a member of the Westfield Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 118 Chapter 517, the Mayville VFW Post 8647, a past member of the Mayville and Chautauqua Fire Departments, and a member of the North Harmony United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed NASCAR racing, State Line Speedway, was an avid wood worker, loved to travel, watching high school football at Chautauqua Lake and the former Mayville Central Schools, outdoor activities, and time with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He was very proud to be an American, USA all the way!

Newt is survived by his wife; Kathy Johnson Wright, whom he married June 20, 1981 at the Mayville United Methodist Church, a daughter; Christine (Bill) Peterson of Mayville, two sons; Graham (Karen) Kelly of Vernon, CT, and Shawn (Desi) Kelly of Lutz, FL, a daughter in law; Jeanni Wright of Westfield, several grandchildren; Graham Kelly III, Remy Kelly, Adam Peterson, Shiloh Williams, Tylor Biekert, Michaela Barringer, and Jonathan Paddock, a great grandson; Ryker Martin Kelly.

He was preceded in death by his son; Marty Wright in 2016, and a sister; Prudie Maytum in 2010.

At Newt's request there will be no visitation observed. A springtime graveside service and celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

The family suggests memorials to be made to a charity or organization of choice.
