DEWITTVILLE- Ronald A. Butterfield, 84 of Dewittville, died Thursday (February 2, 2017) at his home surrounded by his family. He was born October 18, 1932 in Patterson, New Jersey, the son of the late Alfred and Ruth Avery Butterfield. Ron grew up and attended public schools in New York City until he entered the United States Navy at the beginning of the Korean conflict in 1950. He served on a submarine until his discharge in 1953. He became an inspector with the U.S. Border patrol in 1954. In 1955 he became a Police Officer with the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police. In 1957 he became a Trooper with the New York State Police in Troop A in Batavia NY. In 1962 he was assigned as an Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation where he worked on numerous gambling investigations involving organized crime. Also in 1962 he was promoted to the uniform rank of Sergeant while continuing to serve in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. In 1967 Ron was promoted to the uniform rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the position of Zone Commander of Zone 3, Troop A in Falconer, NY where he remained until his retirement in December of 1987. During his career with the State Police he obtained an Associate Degree in Police Science from Erie Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Buffalo State College, and a Master of Science Degree in Education from Buffalo State College. Ron and his wife Shirley owned and operated the Farm Bell, an antique and gift store in Dewittville. Among his favorite hobbies were antiquing, studying history, and time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Mae (Snyder) Butterfield; two daughters, Cynthia L. Gedz of Mayville, Susan L. (Alan) Didas of Aurora CO; six grandchildren, Michael L. (Yesania) Butterfield, Christian A. Chaparro, Olivia M. Wines, Elizabeth E. Didas, Andrea P. Didas, and Jonathan A. Didas; four great-grandchildren, Michael, Aryana, and Matthew Butterfield, and Linda Knappenberger; and one sister, Marilyn Rothstein of Accord, NY. Ron was preceded in death by a daughter, Ellen Butterfield, and a sister, Jeannie Corbett. A spring memorial service will be announced at the convenience of the family.
