MAYVILLE- Virginia Laird Scriven, 89, of 6601 Abrams Dr, Plano Tx, and formerly of Whallon St, Mayville, died Monday, September 10, 2018 at the Methodist Richardson Medical Center in Richardson, TX.

She was born December 28, 1928 in Mayville, the daughter of the late Elmer G. and Dorothy Crandall Laird.

Virginia had worked as a clerk at Mayville Central School for 27 years. Prior to that experience she was a waitress at the Peacock Inn during her high school years and employed at the State Bank of Mayville for four years prior to her marriage. She and her husband, the late Lawrence E. Scriven, collected School and Town property taxes for 15 years.

She was a life member of the Mayville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, was a member of various boards, women's groups, choir, bell choir, and active in church dinners. She served for six years on the area board of Women's Aglow Fellowship, an international non-denominational group of Christian women.

One of the most important parts of her life, outside of her church and family, were her years spent at Mayville Central School; first as a student and graduate, then an attendance clerk and after retirement a member of the School Board of M.C.S. She was also a member of the Chautauqua Lake School Board during the merger of the two schools for six years. The friendships formed with the members of the student body, teaching and support staff, board members, and administration were most rewarding and cherished throughout her life. She was also a member of the Mayville Senior Citizens and served as Chaplain for several years. Virginia served on the Town of Chautauqua Republican Committee for seven years.

The greatest interest in her life were her family and friends. She loved her family and her many friends were a special gift from God that she treasured throughout her life. The last several years she enjoyed traveling to see her family in Florida, Texas, Michigan, and Colorado, as well as various senior citizens trips. She enjoyed Christian music and music of the 40's. Some of her free time was spent tending to her small garden plots around her home. Also, knitting sweaters and dresses were an enjoyable part of her life. The sweaters and dresses were made for World Vision and mailed to children all over the world. She enjoyed reading and listening to Christian books on her iPod which provided a quiet time of relaxation and enjoyment.

She married her friend and lifelong partner, Larry Scriven, on September 3, 1949 in the Mayville United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2010. She loved her role as wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and great aunt, and the time she spent with her family. If there are two words she wants to be remembered by, they are: "She Loved".

She was also preceded in death by her parents; Elmer and Dorothy Laird, three sisters; Ella Wennerstrom of Jamestown, NY, Rebecca Cross of North East, PA, Dorothy Jean Johnson of Augusta, GA, her aunt Lucy of Florida, her grandmother Ella Crandall of Jamestown, NY, and great-granddaughter; Grace Shebester of Michigan.

She is survived by her three children; Linda (Ted) Franklin of Melbourne, FL, Thomas (Sue) Scriven of Northeast, PA, and John/Jack (Kathy) Scriven of Plano, TX, nine grandchildren; Alicia (Scott) Mizel of Georgia, Jacob Franklin of Florida, Bethany (Brooke) Kressler of Georgia, Elizabeth (Chris) Gillson of Michigan, Tom (Dee) Scriven of Colorado, Rebecca (Chris) Shebester of Michigan, Andrew Scriven of Indiana, Steven Scriven of Texas, and Maria (Steven) Scifers of Texas, seven great grandchildren; Micah Mizel of Georgia, Owen and Ava Scriven of Colorado, Charlotte and Amelia Shebester of Michigan, Lilliah Gillson of Michigan, Sophia Scifers of Texas, plus several nieces and nephews; Steve and Janet, Patty, Charmayne, and Becky, Jim and Richard, Donna and Bob.

The most important part of her life was her relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who she invited into her life as an eight-year-old. He was a constant source of joy in her life whatever happened.

The family will receive friends from 2-4PM and 7-9PM on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S Erie St). Her Graduation service will be at 11AM, Saturday, September 22, at the Mayville United Methodist Church. The Rev, Mark Parsons, Rev. Tom Scriven, and Rev. Ted Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery
