WESTFIELD – Wesley W. Weise Jr., 88, formerly of Bliss Road, Westfield and formerly of Mayville, died Monday (March 23, 2015) at WCA Hospital in Jamestown.
He was born May 10, 1926 in Mayville, the son of the late Wesley W. and Frances Shafer Weise Sr..
Wes was a Cement Finisher by trade, working for Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers for over 50 years.
Wes was a veteran having served in the US Navy during WWII from April 1944 until June 1946, he was in the Western Pacific aboard USS Makin Island CVE93 Carrier which carried 30 planes and was named Lucky Lady. The ship earned 5 battle stars and was never hit, and sailed on the East China Sea. Wes was an Aviation Ordinance 1st Class. After being discharged in 1946 he enlisted in the Naval Reserves for 8 years. Wes and his four brothers all served in WWII and they all came home safely.
He was a charter and life member of Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post VFW 8647 in Mayville, where he was a past Post Commander, past Chautauqua County Council Commander, he also held appointments for the New York State VFW. He was also a life member of the William L. Travis American Legion Post 493 in Mayville, a charter member of the WWII Museum in New Orleans, and a member of the Westfield Moose Club 118.
He is survived his brother, James Weise of Menifee, CA; 35 nieces and nephews, caregiver and friend, Jan Derbish of Mayville, his good friend, Jim Wise of Westfield, and his extended family at the VFW Post 8647.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Crump Weise whom he married June 2, 1951 in the Westfield First Presbyterian Church and who died July 12, 2006; his son Richard "Richie" Weise who died August 21, 1976; three brothers, Chester, Gerald and Paul Weise.
The funeral service will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. The Chaplain and members of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post will officiate. Burial will be in the Westfield Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received from 4 to 7 pm Thursday prior to the funeral service in the funeral home.
